For Grasmere, I designed a warm, lighting palette to accurately reflect the candle light of the 1800s. The primary challenge was the unique staging, as the performance area was defined by a large trapezoid. I utilized a combination of PAR can downlighting and ellipsoidal face and side lighting to cut the inner space into six distinct, independently controlled zones. This exact zoning, highlighted by an perimeter border used to show juxtaposition between the inner warmth of the house and the cold exterior. A key part of finalizing this design was balancing my vision with the directors. To bridge the gap between my preferred light intensity of 70% and the director's request for 100%, I modified my light plot by adding two additional face lights. This helped balance the face wash, along with raising the intensity to 90%, to achieve the facial clarity the director wanted.
